REX LEE SALYER of Riverside CA, born in Barnsdall, Oklahoma Feb. 10, 1929 to John F. Salyer and Octa Dee Salyer, passed away in Riverside, CA Aug. 19, 2014 at the age of 85 after a lengthy illness. In 1941 the Salyer family moved from Oklahoma to Klamath Falls, OR. In 1943 they settled in Riverside. Rex attended Chemawa Junior High, Poly High School (Class of 1947) and RCC where he enjoyed playing basketball on champion teams. After his marriage to Patti Wimmersberg, he attended Cal Berkley and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo earning a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for over 30 years as a civilian employee of the U.S. Departments of the Navy and Defense. Retiring in 1992, Rex enjoyed his hobby of collecting and working on vintage automobiles. He loved music and was usually found either whistling or singing a tune as he worked in his shop or yard. During his lifetime he also liked to play chess, golf, and bridge. He was a regular blood donor for many years. Rex was predeceased by his parents; his beloved son, Craig; and his former wife, Patti. He is survived by his wife of over 22 years, Irene Webb Salyer; his son, Brad (Emine) of Santa Rosa, CA; daughter, Priscilla of Riverside; grandchildren, Carrie, Gavin and Eren; his brothers John (Helen) of Lebanon, OR, and Gary (Dianne) of Sequim, WA; and his half-brother, Bill of Tulsa, OK. He was also the beloved "Grampa Rex" to his many step-children and grandchildren. The family is grateful to his caregivers from "Visiting Angels" and to those at "Sunrise at Canyon Crest". Rex was placed in the care of the Bodies for Science Program, a division of Human Anatomy, Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Private interment will be held in Riverside at a later date.
