His wife Louise, the love of his life for 63+ years, was at his side. Richard is survived by his wife, Louise; two children, Alan Richard Haight of Antelope, CA and Karen Lynn Mack of Sonoma, CA; son-in-law, Steve Mack; 4 grandchildren, Bryan Free, Dana Free, Michael Haight and Amanda Alcantar; 2 step grandchildren Steve and Brandi Mack, and 3 great-grandchildren, Audrey and Ethan Alcantar and Rachel Bles. The Haight clan arrived in the "Center of the Valley of Paradise" in 1890. Alonzo Dewitt Haight, Citrus Grower, Grand Terrace, CA was followed in line by John Haight, Judge and Builder, East Riverside (now Highgrove); Albert John Haight, AIA, Architect and first UC Riverside Campus Architect, Highgrove; Richard Albert Haight, PE, Registered Civil Engineer, Riverside; Alan Richard Haight, Electronic Engineer, Antelope; and Michael Alan Haight, Roseville. As a Riverside Sea Scout, Richard once cruised around Catalina on a converted Navy Buoy Boat with Joseph L. Hunter and Capt. John Fred Fry on board. Mr. Hunter had purchased the boat for the Riverside Sea Scout from the Navy and converted it in Riverside to sleep 9. It was moored in Newport Beach for many years. After attending Poly High, Riverside City College and UC Berkeley, he joined the Navy, married the Love of his Life, Louise became a Civil Engineer and went to work for the California Division of Highways, (CAL TRANS) in 1954. Richard was Project Engineer on Interstate Freeways on Routes 15, 215, 40 and 10 in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. He retired as a Deputy District Director CAL TRANS District 8 in 1993. Albert John Haight, Richard Albert Haight, and Alan Richard Haight all graduated from Poly High School (1925, 1948, & 1974 respectively) and Riverside City College. Richard, his wife and their family traveled the deserts of the Southwest, rock hounding and enjoying the great outdoors. He and his son Alan also loved jeeping and dune-bugging at Glamis and Dumont with family and friends, during the early years of the sport. He loved their family trips to Telluride, Colorado every summer from 1972 to 1993 (21 years) where they camped and jeeped in the Rockies around Telluride. In later years, Richard and Louise traveled and cruised many places around the world. He was an avid lover of cars, both old and new, loved swimming, and as for hobbies, collected just about everything at one time or another. He enjoyed life and will be greatly missed by all!
