In 1943 Dick joined the Navy and served as a torpedo man on the USS Proteus, a submarine, deployed in the Asiatic-Pacific area. He was discharged in April, 1946, and enrolled at Chaffey College. In December of 1946 he married his high school sweetheart, Bobbie Ruth Miller. They were married until Bobbie's death in 1985.
