Richard Del Kay Obituary
Richard "Amigo" passed away quietly February 25, 2017, in Palm Springs, CA. He is survived by his 3 children: Michael Kay, Richard Kay, Katy Kay, and 4 grandchildren Richard, David, Peyton & Michaela.
Amigo was born on Sept. 19, 1941 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan to Del and Katherine Kay.
Amigo loved to ride motorcycles and make the world a better place. He graduated with Honors from MIT in 1962. He worked for Detroit Diesel from 1962-1969 as an engineer under Albert Defazio. In 1969 he decided to move his wife Mary (McCarron) Kay to Southern California where he worked for several years at Mattel Toy Co. as their senior Engineer. He then moved onto Diesel Recon as a production engineer. In 1978 Richard decided to start Champion Bearings. He used the company to fund his research and development on Tribology. Richard designed and fabricated many different products. Perhaps his most infamous design was the 100% ceramic bearings we produced for the UAV drone that located Osama Bin Laden's compound in Pakistan. He also designed a specialty bearing for the turret of our M1-A1 Abraham's tank. He was an extremely friendly and likable man. He will be sorely missed by his legion of friends and family. He passed from complications of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
In celebration of Richard's memory, a memorial service will be held on March 24, 2017 at 41033 Laguna Seca Ct., Bermuda Dunes, CA 92203 at 5 p.m.
