Dr.  Richard H. Perry Obituary
DR. RICHARD H. PERRY passed away on October 19, 2014 at the age of 85 in Riverside, CA. He was born in Long Beach, CA to Paul & Marguerite Perry and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947. He met and married his wife of 65 years, Donna Veryl Silven, while attending the College of Emporia, KS. Richard earned his B.A. from the College of Emporia, a M.S. from Kansas Teachers College, Emporia, KS and a Ph.D from the University of Southern California. Various teaching and coaching positions kept Richard and Donna in Kansas for several years until they moved to California when Richard was hired as the head basketball coach at Long Beach State University, now CSULB, from 1958-1967. In 1967 he became an Associate Professor of Physical Education at the University of Southern California, and was later named Director of Athletics at U.S.C. from 1975-1984. As a member of the 1978 Presentation Team to the International Olympic Committee in Athens, Greece, Richard helped bring the Summer Olympics to Los Angeles and the U.S.C. Campus in 1984. Richard and Donna moved to Riverside when Richard was hired as the Director of Athletics-University of California-Riverside where he worked from 1987-1992. He was inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame, the Athletic Hall of Fame-Woodrow Wilson High School, the Long Beach Century Club Hall of Fame, the College of Emporia Athletic Hall of Fame and the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame. He will be missed by his wife Donna; sons James (Linda) Perry of Yorba Linda, CA, John (Melinda) Perry of Nashville, TN; daughters Joan (Gene) Nelson of Olsburg, KS, Janelle (Ron) Marks, Huntington Beach, CA, and big brother Paul Perry of Long Beach, CA in addition to six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 27 at 10:00 a.m., Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4495 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA. Funeral arrangements by Preston and Simons of Riverside, CA.
