1935 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
RICHARD J. (Dick) SMITH Age 78, passed away peacefully at Life Care Center in McMinnville, from a stroke. Richard was born December 30, 1935 in Rochester, NY, to James and Evelyn Smith. His family moved to California when he was a child. He graduated from Whittier HS in 1953 and joined the US Marine Corps in 1954. His US Postal Service career began in 1957 in Riverside. He was the Postmaster in Mentone from 1978 until he retired in 1990. He moved to McMinnville in 1991 and soon began working at Wal-Mart, most recently in the garden center. Richard was active and held offices in the APWU, 19611965; Rubidoux Breakfast Lion's Club, 19741988; NAPS, 1973-1976; IEPA, 1979-1990; NARFE, 1990 to present. The So Cal Lion's Eye Institute awarded him a Lifetime Membership in 1980. He leaves behind his sister Judie Tardy (Ken) of Moreno Valley; his 2 daughters, Nona Nusser (Mark) of Moreno Valley, and Lynise Spargur (Robert) of McMinnville; 5 grandchildren, Christie Pinard, Stephanie Philbrook, Christopher Kischell, Andrew Arnold, Kyle Spargur; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Gary, and 2 grandsons, Brian Kischell & Daryl Pinard. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 16th at Macy & Son Funeral Home, 135 NE Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128. Interment will be private at Willamette Nat'l Cemetery in Portland, OR.
