RICHARD M. COLERN July 21, 1928 - April 6, 2016 Born in Buffalo, NY to John and Ruth Colern. Richard joined the U.S. Navy Jan. 11, 1946. Assignments included COMNRVPHIL USS Sperry, Gen. Randall. MSTS, Seattle, Wash., MSTO Portland, OR, and the USS Princeton (LPH5). Among his memorable experiences was Operation Dominic (A Bomb test.), the Princeton being flagship for JTF - 8 at Jackson Island, witnessing 12 atomic devices detonated the Princeton delivering Army MAC units. OB aircraft and helicopters to Vietnam in 1963 rendezvousing with the USS Wasp to pick up President Eisenhower's helicopter to be delivered to Japan for upcoming visit (which was cancelled due to demonstrations in Japan). Duty on the USS Sperry (AS-12), 1948 rendezvousing with the USS Ronquil off San Diego to take sick ship mates off for medical treatment. He retired in May 1965 at Point Magu. Employed as a correctional officer for the state of Calif., in Chino, CA. Richard retired after 24 years in 1987. Richard married Pauline Peternell from San Diego, CA. They had 4 children, Michael, Kathy, Denise, Shane, 2 granddaughters, 3 great grandchildren. Richard also has 1 brother Jack and his wife Lillian and many nieces, nephews, and cousins on the east coast. Richard and Pauline lived in Riverside, CA for 28 years before moving up to the high desert where they have lived for 28 years. Richard and Pauline had been married for 66 years. Richard will be cremated, and buried at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date. Richard leaves his wife Pauline and 2 sons Michael, Shane, and wife Laura.
