Richard Roland Saunders Obituary
RICHARD ROLAND SAUNDERS Dick Saunders, Mr. S, Dad, and "Honey", were some of the many names he answered to. Last Friday, January 18th, he left this earth for yet his latest adventure. His days of piloting his many vessels, crafting his stellar bar-b-que meals, working at Saunders and McMillin, Inc., and anticipating his fishing trips where he always caught the "biggest ones", came to an end as he slipped away from his beloved wife, Elizabeth, at their home here in Riverside. Mr. Saunders was born in 1929, forever referring to himself as a Depression Baby. Although this fact was true, it did not describe his constantly caring and loving personality. His smile told little of the passing of his own dad at an early age, and a hard working mother who brought up Dick and his two younger brothers. The values and virtues that she instilled in him carried him firmly the rest of his days. He truly exemplified what we refer to as a self-made man. He was a scuba diver, an avid racquet ball player, a boater, and a champion fisherman. When he went on fishing trips to the East Cape in Baja California, he often came home with the jackpots as well as many fish. At home, Dick enjoyed pruning his rose bushes every January and filling his bird feeders much to the bird's delight. Dick started in the painting business as an apprentice for his uncle in Long Beach. As his skill developed so did his business and he began a successful career as first a painter and then as a painting contractor. He served on numerous committees of the Tri-County Painting and Decorating Contractors of America and also served as President of that organization more than once. He was a member of Shoreline Yacht Club in Long Beach and spent many summers cruising to Catalina, enjoying boating and the ocean. He traveled all over the world and almost reached his traveling goal by visiting five of the earth's seven continents. He lived his life with grace, honesty, and a great love of his family and friends. He took the time to enjoy every day, never taking anything for granted. He was known as Dick to his family and friends, and as a gentleman to anyone else who met him. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of nearly 26 years, Elizabeth Saunders; seven children, Rick T. Saunders, James Saunders, Christine Boykin, Joanie Hagen, Kim Marlowe, Dean Collins and Jeremy Collins; seventeen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and his loyal dog Lucy. He also leaves his business partner and friend of over 50 years, Ken McMillin, and dozens of loyal employees who he employed during those many years. Our hearts are broken with his passing but we know his memory will live on in all our hearts. A memorial Service will be held at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside at 11AM on Thursday the 31st of January.
