Rita M. Pappenfus Obituary
RITA M. PAPPENFUS (SPAIGHT) passed away July 11, 2014 in the town of her birth, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Born in 1922, she lived a long and full life enjoying her home in California, family, travel and friends. She is preceded in death by parents Harold Louis Spaight and Ida Lucinda Ammerman, and sister Theresa Hestwood. Her husband of 54 years, Ernest William Pappenfus passed away in 1999. She re-married in 2009 and is survived by Tom Neenan of Center Point, Iowa. Rita grew up in Cedar Rapids and attended Clark College. While working at Collins radio she met and married Ernie, who was an engineer there in 1943 She, Pappy, and their 3 children moved to Los Altos, California in 1962 then to West Covina in 1969. While in West Covina she became involved with the Assistance League. After a few years Rita and Pappy purchased a grapefruit ranch in Temecula which eventually became their permanent home. During this time she was instrumental in founding the Assistance League of Temecula Valley. She held numerous offices including president as well as holding positions in the national organization. After Pappy died she moved to Bear Creek in Murrieta, California. Rita passed away from complications after a stroke. She is survived by her three children, Jim Pappenfus (Pam) of Twin Bridges, Montana, John Pappenfus, (Elaine) of Lake Elsinore, CA,and Karen Wood (Alan Batcheller)of Herndon, Virginia, and 7 grandchildren, Dennis, Todd, Abby, Jessica, Eric, Kevin and Jason. She also has 4 great grandchildren, Audrey and Sydney, Peyton and Braden. She is also survived by her two sisters Bernadine Walter and Rosemary Downs and brother Tom Spaight. A memorial service in California will be held August 6th, 2014 from 4 to 6 pm at the Assistance League meeting room at 28720 Via Montezuma, Temecula, Ca 92590. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Assistance League of Temecula Valley at the same address.
