Robert Earl Jones Sr. Obituary
ROBERT EARL JONES, SR. Robert Earl Jones, Sr., age 79, died quietly in the early morning hours of May 29, 2016, with his loving family by his side. Robert was born in Birmingham, AL, to the union of Jimmie Lee and Marie (Granger) Jones. When Robert was 10, the family relocated to East Syracuse, NY and then, to Syracuse, NY, where he graduated from Smith Technological High School. Rob, as his family called him, was an independent and self-reliant young man, who spent much of his early teens chasing golf balls and caddying at local courses where, in the process, he developed skill and a lifetime love of the game. As long as he was physically able, he continually strove for mastery and excellence on the links. Following his graduation from high school, Rob began what was to be a 20 year career in the U.S. Army, serving in the States, Germany, South Korea, and Vietnam. Following his retirement in 1975, he and his family settled in Southern California, where he used his military training to become a biomedical engineer and to eventually start his own successful business. A second retirement in 2006 afforded him time to pursue two of his main loves: golf and traveling with his favorite companion; his second wife, Anne. A man of boundless curiosity and a great love of people, he liked to say "I've been around the world twice and shook everyone's hand at least once." Because of his enthusiasm for life, he made friends all over the world, gaining love and respect from almost everyone he met. In addition to his parents, Robert was also predeceased by his brother, Jimmie Lee Jones, Jr. and first wife, Gwendolyn (Dixon) Jones. Surviving, besides his wife of 34 years, Anne, of Moreno Valley, CA, are his children by his first wife: his son, Robert Earl Jones, Jr., of San Diego, CA, daughters Yvonne Sullivan of Vail, AZ, Leslie Taylor (Joseph) of Oceanside, CA, and Kristina, of Escondido, CA; grandchildren, Janelle White and Stephanie Sullivan of Vail, AZ, and Malik Jones of Los Angeles, CA; and great-granddaughter, Reynah White of Vail, AZ; sisters Barbara of Syracuse and Rose Marie Jones of East Syracuse, NY; and brother, Daryll (Stephanie), of Buffalo, NY, as well as many loving relatives and friends. Robert will be sorely missed but, in his case, rather than say "Rest in Peace", perhaps we should say "Golf in Peace." A memorial service will be held for Robert at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA, 92518, on September 9, 2016, at 11 am. For those who wish, donations may be made in his name to: Moreno Valley Chorale, P.O. Box 1221, Moreno Valley, CA, 92556.
