Robert Gordon Wiens Obituary
May 18, 1935 – November 8, 2017
Robert Gordon Wiens died surrounded by his family Wednesday, November 8, 2017. He was born in Hanford, California on May 18, 1935 to Susie and Jacob Wiens. He was an accomplished banker, proud University of Redlands Bulldog, loyal churchman, and beloved member of the Inland Empire community. Most especially, he loved his wife of 61 years, Marion, and the family they made together. Bob spent his career at Redlands Federal Savings and Loan, beginning as management trainee and working his way up to President and CEO. His leadership at Redlands Federal was strengthened by four years in the Navy, as a Supply Corp Officer, stationed on Oahu.
In his 39 years of banking, he particularly harbored a deep passion for helping customers realize their dream of owning a home, earning the gratitude of countless people. Even after a debilitating stroke, he worked to recover his health, because he loved his employees, customers, and the community so much. He retired in 1995.
In addition to his distinguished career, Bob exemplified the spirit of Bulldog for Life, steadfastly serving on the University's Board of Trustees from 1979 to 2011, and was
thereafter named an Emeritus Trustee. He received the University's 75th Anniversary Medal, the Distinguished Service Award, the Centennial Award, and served on the Alumni Association Board from 1977–81, including as its president. He loved spending time with the dozens of Wiens Family Endowed Scholarship recipients, cheered from the stands as a loyal Bulldog athletics fan, continued connecting with each new generation of Pi Chi fraternity members, and donned regalia on stage for Commence- ment so that he could witness each graduation. He gleefully handed each of his own children their U of R diplomas. Bob was a loyal Presbyterian churchman and choir man for most of his life, serving as the Stewardship and Finance Chair and leading the Endowment Committee in the Yucaipa and San Bernardino churches. Over the years, he was enthusiastically involved with the Optimist Club, the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation Board, the Redlands Bowl, the Boys and Girls Club, and the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, among many other local causes. He loved vacationing with his family at Napili Kai on Maui.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marion; his siblings, Lorraine and Ken, and their families, Joe, Karen, Craig, and Lori; his children and their spouses, Gordon, Margie, Steven, Becky, Nancy, and Sam; their grandchildren; Ryan, Kiersten, Andy, Jacob, Taylor, Bobby, Erin; and a brand, new great-granddaughter, Caroline.
A Memorial Service will be at the University Memorial Chapel at 11am on November 20. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to the Wiens Endowed Scholarship at the University of Redlands or First Presbyterian Church, San Bernardino.
