Robert Joseph Drew Obituary
ROBERT "BOB" JOSEPH DREW Robert "Bob" Joseph Drew passed away at his home in Riverside, CA on May 24, 2015 at the age of 81. He is survived by his loving wife, Chizuko of 61 years and is lovingly remembered by his 6 children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Bob was born in Newton, MA on August 1, 1933. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Japan, he met Chizuko, the love of his life. Over the next twenty years Bob and his growing family lived in Colorado, Alaska, Guam, northern and southern California. In 1966-67, Bob served in Viet Nam. While stationed on Guam, under Bob's leadership, the men of the Holy Name Society of Anderson Air Force Base built and painted a chapel, painted three churches, a school and beautified a shrine for several island communities. For his contribution he was commissioned as a member of the Ancient Order of the Chamorro of the Island of Guam in 1971 by Governor Carlos Camacho. Bob loved sports, basketball being his first love. He spent hours and hours with the kids in the neighborhood, supplying the gear, rides to and from the sports field, often buying food and drinks after a long day of playing sports. Bob was a tough competitor but fair, if you beat him, you would have had to given it your best effort. Bob retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service and purchased Riverside Vacuum in 1974. For the next 40 years, Bob worked 6 days a week at the same location, 6046 Magnolia Avenue. Bob's unique interaction with his customers was the secret to success. Bob was a people person, always ready to tell a joke, keeping the customers laughing and looking forward to their next visit to Riverside Vac. For a family business to survive for 40 years, providing the same type of sales and service and staying in the same location is unheard of, especially considering the ups and downs of the economy. Bob was well known in Riverside as an honest business man who would offer a hand to anyone in need of help. As many customers have said, if Bob can't fix it, it can't be fixed. Bob spent many hours teaching the business to his second son Mark, and to his third son John, who now continues serving the community as the owner of Riverside Vac. Bob wasn't the most patient man, but getting things done right was the goal, and Bob would have to take a step back to allow his sons to learn from their mistakes. Bob was a fun loving man, with a great sense of humor, hard working and willing to lend a hand. Bob will be missed by his family and many people who were fortunate enough to meet and get to know him. A memorial service with Military Honors will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on June 10th at 11:30 am. Condolences may be expressed at [email protected] Make donations in Bob's name to .
