ROBERT JOHN MELSH July 27, 1938 - December 21, 2018 Robert "Bob" John Melsh of Riverside, CA, passed away quietly on December 21, 2018. On Twitter recently, Bob called himself "a political and news junky, a teacher, single, and a proud geek". Bob was also a life-long political and social justice activist, as well as a dedicated teacher, community volunteer, brother, and uncle. Born and schooled in Des Moines, IA, Bob graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1956. He moved to Redlands, CA with his mother and younger brother in 1956 after his father's death in 1954. Enrolling at UC Riverside, Bob earned a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. Later he received a Masters Degree in Political Science from UC Berkeley, and another Masters Degree in Public Administration from Cal State Long Beach. He was a 20-year member of Riverside's Universalist Unitarian Church where he served in a variety of capacities including: President, Board of Trustees; General Member of the Board; and Chair or Co-chair of the Social Justice Committee for a number of years. Numerous local and state-wide organizations benefited from Bob's leadership skills, among them: the Democratic Partyhe twice (2002 and 2004) ran for a seat in the California State Assembly representing the (then) 64th District; Riverside Coalition for Police Accountability of which Bob was a founder and active member; Inland Congregations United for Change (ICUC); Human Relations Commission; Riverside Mental Health Association; California Community College Association; Big Brothers Big Sisters of America; and Mended Hearts, to list a few. Bob is survived by his brother, Stephen and wife, Deborah, of Oklahoma City, his niece, Kathleen Damico (Ernie) of Vancouver, WA, and his nephew, Jeremy Melsh of San Raphael, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert John Melsh and Genevieve Marian Peterson Melsh. Communications with the family may be emailed to samelsh@yahoo.com. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Universalist Unitarian Church of Riverside or Planned Parenthood. A Memorial Service is set for Saturday, January 19th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 3525 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside (next door to the Main Library).
