Robert (Bob) Mitton Obituary
ROBERT (BOB) MITTON
Robert Mitton, of Highland, CA, went home peacefully to his heavenly Father on May 6, 2017, with family at his side. Bob was born June 21, 1922 in Detroit, MI, the second child of James and Marie Mitton. Bob moved to Lancaster, CA as a child and then grew up in Los Angeles where he joined the Navy in 1942 and fought in WWII. After the war he learned the building trade and construction, then re-enlisted in the Air Force to fight in the Korean War.
He married Bette Jellison in 1954 and settled in Fontana, CA where they had two daughters, Cindi and Lori. After further schooling, he moved to San Bernardino and became a Registered Engineer. He rose through the ranks in the San Bernardino County Building and Safety Department, from which he retired in 1982 as the Department Director. He also served in the Air National Guard until he retired as Lt. Col.
He enjoyed golf, motorcycle rides, RV-ing and fishing at his cabin in Big Bear. Bob was a Mason, a member of the 163rd Air Wing Retirees, the Elks and the Shriners.
He will be remembered for his subtle humor, his willingness to help others, his even temper and dedication in caring for his wife as she became crippled in her later years. He was a great teacher, provider, role model and friend and he will be dearly missed.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Billy, his wife Bette and daughter Lori. He is survived by his daughter Cindi, numerous nieces and nephews, his godson Bob Turner, as well as his caregivers, who became his extended family, Gloria and Clara.
Memorial Services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on July 21st at 2:30pm sharp. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow at the Victoria Club.
