Roger J. Roberts Obituary
ROGER JAMES ROBERTS, age 88, of Banning, California, entered into eternal life on February 26, 2016. He was born December 2, 1927, near Taylorsville, Ohio, son of the late J. Rolland Roberts and Helen Irene (Fawley) Roberts. He completed his elementary and high school education at Mowrystown, where he graduated with honors in 1945 at the age of 17. He began a course of study in engineering at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He was drafted into the army in early 1946 after only two quarters of college. Military service during 1946-47 was with G-2, Army Ground Forces Pacific, in Honolulu. He achieved the rank of sergeant T/4. Following honorable discharge from the military, he returned to college and completed his engineering studies. He was an honors student, excelling in the sciences and mathematics, and graduated with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Ohio State University in December 1951. He held many supervisory and project management positions during his career. His first employment after graduation was with General Electric during 1952-1957, which included four years with Aircraft Gas Turbine Division in Evendale, Ohio. He worked in the Flight Test Group, evaluating J-47 jet engine performance on Boeing B-47 bombers. This included field assignments at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. He married Marjory A. Nugen in Wichita on December 16, 1955. In 1957 he accepted employment with Aerojet-general Company, Sacramento, California. During 1957-1969, he participated in Aerojet's development of Titan ICBM and NASA rocket propulsion. He left Aerojet Sacramento in 1969 to work at the National Reactor Test Site in Idaho. During 1969-1987 he worked at the Aerojet Nuclear Corporation and EG&G Idaho on the design of Nuclear test systems. During this time he suffered the untimely loss of his wife Marjory, in 1984. He ended his career with an 18-month field assignment at the TVA Watts Bar nuclear plant in Tennessee and retired in Idaho Falls on July 1, 1987. His second marriage was to Susan A. Bishop on April 13, 1985. In retirement, they traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and to Canada. This included visits with family in Idaho, Florida and California. In addition, they loved foreign travel and visited 49 countries in Europe, East Mediterranean, North Africa, South America, South Pacific and the Far East. Photography was a favorite hobby of Roger's which mixed well with travel. Other interests were computers, reading and family genealogy. Membership in professional organizations included A.S.M.E., N.S.P.E., and the California Society of the Professional Engineers. He obtained his California Professional Engineer License in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He is survived by his wife, Susan; brother, Richard (Mary) Roberts, in Ohio; daughter, Linda (Roberts) Grant, in Idaho; son, Steven E. (Bridget) and two grandchildren, Ranger and Marjory Roberts, in Florida and step-son Douglas E. Bishop in California. Burial will be at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 11251 Desert Lawn Drive, Calimesa CA 92320, with a private graveside service on Wednesday, March 2 at 1pm.
