Rolland (Ron) Spafford Obituary
Age 93, joined his beloved wife, Betty, in heaven on November 19, 2016. Ron was born to Earl and Mabel Spafford on January 16, 1923 in Riverside, CA. After graduation from Riverside Polytechnic High School, Ron volunteered for the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed at Burtonwood Army Air Corps Base, near Liverpool, England where he was an airplane engine mechanic until the end of the war. Ron married Marian Lutz, an elementary school teacher. After he graduated from Barber School, Ron and Marian moved to Victorville. They had a daughter, Betty Joy. Dad owned his own shop, and worked as a barber for over 25 years. He graduated from Victor Valley College, then San Bernardino State College with a BA in Business Administration. Dad went into business hauling mobile homes to trailer parks throughout California. He and Marian had parted, and Dad married Betty Elliott. Dad & Betty retired to Grand Terrace, California. Dad resumed his love of motorcycles; his last motorcycle was a turquoise Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic; he continued taking it for Sunday spins until he was 88! Dad and Betty walked their little dog Skippy every evening. They also took frequent bicycle rides through the neighborhood; Dad took his last bike ride with his daughter, Betty Joy, in March, 2016 when he was 93! He loved to listen to his wife Betty, and step sons Geoffrey and Bill play guitar and sing the old country songs. Dad and Betty were inseparable; after she passed on February 16, 2016, his health began to decline. He was diagnosed with lung cancer last July, and in September, he and Skippy moved to New Mexico to live with his daughter Betty Joy and her husband Mike. Dad received excellent care at the VA Hospital in Albuquerque. He passed away peacefully at home with his family (including Skippy) at his side. He was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 42 years; sisters Edna Belle (Sissie) Forbes and Avelina Crom; and brother, Rex Spafford. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Joy Martin & husband Mike; step-children Krista Lowe & husband Dave, Geoffrey Martens (since deceased) & wife Michelle, and Bill & wife Bobbi. He was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dad was a kind, honest and loving man, and was respected by all who knew him. He was our family's strong and steadfast rock, and we miss and love him. He has been cremated; his ashes will be placed with his wife Betty's at the Riverside National Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at the Riverside National Cemetery on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10:45 AM.
