Roy Melvin Otto

1921 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
ROY MELVIN OTTO Roy passed in his sleep at his retirement home in Van Nuys, CA on Monday, April 7, 2014. He would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on July 12. Christened Melvin Roy Otto, with his twin being Elvin Ray Otto they "fixed" the little problem with their names when they joined the Navy, and he was thereafter known as Roy. Born in Sheridan, MO in 1921 he was first and foremost a car buff buying his first brand new car with his paper route money while still in high school. He met his wife Lenice (a young beauty from Wisconsin) while stationed in San Francisco during WWII. They were married in 1945 and eventually settled in the then sparsely populated San Fernando Valley in Canoga Park, CA, where they raised 3 sons and 1 daughter. Roy worked hard to provide for his family, eventually landing a job "throwing mail" for the post office on a train running between Los Angeles and San Francisco. As the world changed his day job moved into the dead letter office of the Van Nuys post office. Evenings and weekends he worked as a furniture upholsterer, doing what would now be considered complex math and geometry problems in his head as he produced beautiful work from his home shop. Retiring, he and Lenice moved to Hemet, CA in 1985 then a sparsely populated valley reminding them of where they had started their family 30 plus years prior. This is where they enjoyed warm weather and over 20 years of beautiful sunsets with each other. Their retirement was punctuated by cross country drives to visit friends and family (although the drives were often longer than the visits), numerous exotic trips as well as anniversaries spent in "their city"- San Francisco. Roy was predeceased by his wife of 63 years and their son Dennis, and is survived by his "favorite" daughter Gail, sons Craig and Jeffrey, 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.
