Ruth J. Koch M.D. Obituary
RUTH J. KOCH, MD, died peacefully in her sleep at her Riverside home on October 31, 2015. The long-time S. California resident, born to Gunter and Erna Mae Koch, spent her early years in Michigan helping at her father's dental practice while she attended high school and college. The 1977 graduate of Andrews University was not only the president of her class but intent on becoming a physician. She achieved that goal in 1980 when she graduated from LLU School of Medicine and entered an OB/gyn residency which she completed in 1983. After brief stints working for large organizations, Dr. Koch opened her own practice in the Riverside community and was much in demand as a doctor who was known to sing "Happy Birthday," as she delivered babies. After many busy years as a solo practitioner, Dr. Koch closed her practice and went to work for the Indian Health Service, her last formal professional position. However, professional attainments were only one aspect of the woman who lived life large (pun intended!) She was an inveterate traveler who made many international trips to exotic places. It was on one such vacation that she fell in love with polar bears which she continued to prize. A remarkable cook, she was an even more extraordinary hostess at parties at her hilltop home and were events to savor. Gifted musically, she was an accomplished pianist but also played the violin and possessed a rich and powerful singing voice. She enjoyed many other arts and was a frequent concert goer, loved the theater and surrounded herself with many objects of artistic beauty. Aside from her many gifts and achievements, family, friends and colleagues knew "Truth" to be a vibrant person who was generous to a fault. Although she never married or had children, her extended family was extensive because of her loving and magnetic spirit. Ruth was preceded in death by her mother and younger brother. She is survived by her father and his wife, Dottie. A celebration of her life will be held Sat., Nov 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Riverside. Donations can be made to her favorite charities: Make a Wish Foundation and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
