RUTH MARIE LINEHAN August 25, 1921 November 4, 2012 Age 91, died of pneumonia on Nov. 4, 2012, in Riverside, where she had lived for five years. She was one of the first residents of Lakewood, the nation's second post-war planned housing development, and lived in that city for 55 years. Ruth was born on Aug. 25, 1921, in Buffalo, NY, to Lawrence and Catherine Kelly. As a high school senior, she met her future husband, William Linehan. They were married in 1942. While he served as a second lieutenant in World War II, she worked as a photo colorist in a Buffalo department store. In 1951, the family, now with two sons, moved to California, first to the Bay Area and then to Long Beach and finally Lakewood. Her husband worked as a psychiatric social worker for the state and later became assistant director of the Los Angeles County Conciliation Court. Ruth worked in the photo department and candy counter at the May Co. department store and in 1961 became an eligibility worker for the Department of Public Social Services. She was president of Phi Gamma Epsilon sorority in the late 1950s. She and her husband enjoyed gourmet cooking, wine-tasting and hosting parties at their cabin north of Yucca Valley. They retired in 1977. After her husband died in 1978, Ruth worked briefly at Knott's Berry Farm. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, she traveled extensively in the Caribbean, Europe, China, Japan, the Middle East and South America. Hobbies included oil and Japanese brush painting. She remained active in her later years, taking exercise classes, walking for exercise and traveling to local casinos. Ruth is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: William Linehan and Donna Kennedy of Riverside and Steve and Sharon Distance of Monterey; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, James Linehan and Shelby Utley of Bloomington; twin grandchildren, Bruce and Chelsea Linehan of Bloomington; her adopted family, Ray and Jeanna McNamara and their children, Mykel, Taylor and Riley, all of Chicago; and many friends. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at All Souls Mortuary, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, 6165 Industrial Ave., Riverside, CA 92504.
