Ruth Orrenmaa Obituary
RUTH P. ORRENMAA beloved Riverside teacher for over 50 years, died in her sleep January 1, in San Diego, CA. She was a popular and admired language teacher at Ramona High School with a special love for Latin, French and ancient history. The Latin Club, which she founded, was famous for its yearly Latin Banquet. She spoke 6 languages. Known for her love of travel, she brought students with her to over 40 countries. She shared her passion for teaching with her husband, Allan J. Orrenmaa, who preceded her in death in 1965. A teacher and principal, Orrenmaa Elementary school is named in his honor. For 45 years she has continued to award a scholarship in his name to Alvord District seniors. She graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College. An avid reader, she had a collection of books numbering in the thousands. She was an active volunteer of the Arlington Friends of the Library, a member of Aurantia Chapter DAR, Delta Zeta and Delta Kappa Gamma. After retirement she taught at Riverside Adult School and was deeply committed to the students in her Citizenship classes. She rejoiced along with them as they succeeded in becoming US citizens. Throughout her life she inspired her students, friends and family with her kindness, generosity and strength of spirit. She is survived by her daughter Kerry and son-in-law Glenn Wernz; by her grandson Mark Hoppus and wife Skye; by her granddaughter Anne McMurray; and by her great-grandchildren, Jack Hoppus and Cam and Quinn McMurray. A graveside service will be held Sat. Jan 22, 11:00 at Olivewood Cemetery. Friends and students are invited to join us.
