Ruth "Gret" Turbeville

Obituary Condolences

RUTH (GRET) TURBEVILLE Gret was born on September 19, 1919 and passed away peacefully on August 25, 2013 at the age of 93. She was the daughter of David and Elsie Sorensen and one of seven children who all preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Bruce (Rosalie); grandchildren Scott (Brenda), Tracy, Greg (Renee) and an extended family including great-grandchildren who all loved their Grandma Turby. She is also survived by her nephews, nieces, and many dear friends. Gret was married to Robert Bruce Turbeville "Turby" whom she met on a dance floor in 1942 while he was stationed at March Air Force Base. Three dances later he told her he was going to marry her and a few months later they were and spent 54 years together until he passed in 1996. During Turby's career in the Air Force, they traveled many places but the most memorable was when they moved to England in 1951. She was used to being a serviceman's wife so it was another adventure for her to pack up the car and drive Bruce 3,000 miles across the country where they boarded the Queen Elizabeth and resided at the Otley House. When they returned to the states, her home was San Bernardino, CA until 2012 when she moved to Sacramento to be closer to Bruce. Her fondest memories were spent with her family and friends who walked through her door on Montrose Drive. She always had a batch of chocolate chip cookies or brownies ready for you. She was affectionately known as the "Florence Nightingale" in her neighborhood because she would take care of her friends and visit them during illness. She held a variety of jobs but the one she was most proud of was that of being a wife, mom, and grandma. Gret was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and lived her remaining months with a smile on her face and always telling her caregivers she was fine. The family would like to thank all of Gret's caregivers and hospice staff for taking such good care of her during her final months. There will be a celebration of her life at a later date in San Bernardino. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Gret's honor may be made to either the Sacramento Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, 9310 Tech Center Dr, Ste. 250, Sacramento, CA 95826 or First Call Hospice Foundation, Attn: Cathy Treble, 6929 Sunrise Blvd, Ste. 180, Citrus Heights, CA 95610.
