S. Lane Cash Obituary
March 19, 1944 – March 17, 2017
S. Lane Cash passed away after a gallant fight, surrounded by his loving family and dear friend, on March 17, 2017 at UCI Medical Center, in Orange, California. The son of Seymer Lucas and Luella Mae Cash, Lane was born in Riverside, California, March 19, 1944, and a lifelong resident. Lane enjoyed childhood in his hometown; dressing up for Riverside's De Anza days, building snowmen during the amazing snow fall of 1949, and making childhood pals who remained his friends throughout his life. Lane attended Magnolia School, Central Junior High, and graduated from Poly High School in 1962. After attending RCC, Lane received his B.A. degree in Sociology from CSU San Bernardino.
Lane married his sweetheart and "favorite neighbor", Susan, and together they began an almost 50 year marriage where his family was the center of his life. He was overjoyed to become the dad of Christopher and was a constant and devoted father. He was always in his son's life and readily participated as a Scout leader and band booster. Lane dearly loved his grandsons Andrew and Alex and enjoyed playing the role of a "fun" grandpa, with his magic tricks and chocolate milkshakes.
Lane retired after more than forty years as a Division Director of the Riverside County Probation Department. He began his career working with children in trouble and moved to the supervision of adults. As times changed the severity of the crimes changed, though he often said that even in the worst of circumstances he tried to treat others with respect. Over the course of his career, Lane was engaged in youth diversion and rehabilitation, gang violence suppression, the mentoring and training of employees, and was active as a leader in several professional associations. In retirement, Lane could be found on the golf course, in his garden, or fishing with his grandsons.
Lane is survived by his loving wife, Susan Niederkorn Cash; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Sjany Cash; grandsons Andrew and Alexander Cash, as well as his many sisters and brothers in-law. Lane's big heart and dry humor will be missed greatly by his family and friends. Lane's family wishes to thank Dr. Vaishali Saste for her tireless support of Lane.
Graveside services will be held on April 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at Olivewood Memorial Park, 3300 Central Avenue, Riverside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria Avenue Forever, PO Box 4152, Riverside, CA, the , or .
