Samuel Frederick Mundy Obituary
SAMUEL FREDERICK MUNDY 1964-2015 Native Riverside resident Sam Mundy passed away among family and friends on April 19, 2015. Sam was the son of the late Fred Mundy and the late Virginia Mundy, who owned and operated Mundy's Central Pharmacy, a Riverside institution for decades. Mundy's customers could enjoy a hamburger and a malted at the lunch counter while waiting for their prescriptions to be filled. Old-time Riversiders may remember a skinny blond boy (his hair cut in the crew cut style favored by his ex-marine, no-nonsense father) patrolling the aisles during after school hours. Often times, out of sight from Fred or Virginia, Sam would feign shoplifting candy bars in plain view of customers just for kicks. Such was the beginning of Sam's lifelong love of pranks. After graduating from Poly High School in 1982, Sam was hired at Krieger & Stewart Engineering Consultants in Riverside, where he worked for 33 years until his passing. While at K&S, Sam participated in design of complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects throughout Southern California. Sam was an avid sports fan, particularly motor sports and NFL football. He took three pilgrimages to the Indianapolis 500 and each time returned to entertain friends and family with animated highlights of the trip ("then I bent down and kissed the bricks" he would say with reverie, always as if sharing for the first time). Never a fair weather fan, Sam was steadfast in his 40 year allegiance to the Pittsburgh Steelers, in spite of the verbal torment imposed by his buddies. But to all who knew him, such loyalty was not a surprise---it was a cornerstone of Sam's personality. Sam's childhood was filled with outdoor family activities, including scouting, camping, off-roading, boating and fishing. So, when he married Sarah Suverkrup in 1996, it was only natural that they and their two children (Clara--the apple of Sam's eye, and Bolton--Sam's partner in crime) continued the tradition. Clara and Bolton both became scouts at an early age. Sam was a friend to all animals, especially dogs. Over the years, his and Sarah's home would be the landing spot for dogs who had to be given up by their owners--and, more often than not, the pooches became part of the Mundy brood. Sam Mundy will be remembered as a loving father and a loyal friend. And he will be missed. Sam is survived by his daughter Clara (12); son Bolton (10); and their mother Sarah, all of Riverside; his brother Doug (Liz) and nephew Tyler, all of Lake Tahoe. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 29th at 1 PM at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Riverside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center of Riverside.
