Sheryl Bundy Thomsen Obituary
SHERYL BUNDY THOMSEN January 23, 1954 - February 17, 2014 Sheryl Lynn Thomsen left this earth and went to her heavenly Father and Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 17th. Sheryl passed away after a long illness at home surrounded by family. She was born on January 23, 1954 in Las Cruces, New Mexico and was a resident of Riverside for many years. The nature of her father's job required frequent moves for Sheryl's family. Sheryl enjoyed the experience of having lived in fourteen states throughout her lifetime. In 1968 her family moved to Wildomar and Sheryl attended and graduated from Lake Elsinore High School. In the years that followed she raised two wonderful daughters and finished her education, earning a Master's Degree in Education. Sheryl became an elementary school teacher and taught for over 25 years, including Pine Grove School in Crescent City, California, and Goodhope Elementary in Perris. However, most of her years of teaching were at S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary in Riverside. She thoroughly loved teaching, her fellow teachers and especially her students. She was recognized as District New Teacher of the Year in her first year of teaching. As much as Sheryl loved teaching, she often said that being a mom was the best job she ever had. And what a loving and caring mother she was. She served as a great example of what a mother should be to her daughters Karryn and Kristen. Sheryl's legacy is being carried on as Karryn and Kristen are wonderful mothers to her grandchildren. After Sheryl retired her new favorite job was that of Grammy. She loved her grandkids and during her illness they truly were her best medicine. When they were around - her countenance changed and she completely forgot her suffering and pain. Sheryl was also a wonderful and loving wife to her husband, George. After her relationship with Jesus, Sheryl's greatest passion was for her family. After the listing of her name, she wanted her headstone to read "Wife, Mother, Grammy" - and so it will. Sheryl loved crafts, quilting and knitting. She often thought of others as she participated in these pursuits - making quilts, blankets and many other gift items for family and friends. There is not a child in her immediate or extended family who does not have a quilt or blanket that was made by Sheryl. Through the Quilters Guild, she even participated in providing quilts for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. At Sheryl's 60th birthday party she requested that in lieu of gifts people bring warm hats that will be donated to cancer patients. Over 150 hats were collected that day. That was Sheryl - always thinking of and doing for others. She also enjoyed simple pleasures like reading, going to antique stores with her husband George, eating breakfast or lunch at Simple Simons, and especially spending vacation time with family. Sheryl is survived by her husband George, who lovingly cared for her throughout her illness; her daughters Karryn Lurock (husband Jami) of Atascadero, Kristen Montes (husband Jerry) of Long Beach; grandsons Tristan, Julian, Roman, and baby Lurock; sisters Karen Bundy, Christine Bennett, and Mandy Bundy; brother Steve Bundy (wife Cheryl); sister-in-law Susan Breyer (husband Ron) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Patricia Lee Bundy and father Richard Lee Bundy. The family especially wishes to thank those who so caringly attended to Sheryl during her illness, especially Dr. Vaishali Saste, nurses Jean, Patty and Christy, all of Riverside Medical Clinic and her nurse Saeid of Heartland Hospice who cared for her in the final weeks of her life, and also the staff of the City of Hope. You truly were a blessing to Sheryl and us. A Memorial Service for Sheryl is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22 at Harvest Christian Fellowship at 6115 Arlington Avenue in Riverside. A reception will immediately follow the conclusion of the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made in Sheryl's memory to The City of Hope at: www.cityofhope.org/giving
