Susan Estella Lemire Obituary
SUSAN ESTELLA LEMIRE Susan Estella Lemire of Riverside passed away at Riverside Community Hospital on November 26, 2012 at 1:57 p.m. with her beloved son, Richard, by her side. She had been suffering from advanced dementia for one year, but was pain-free and in good spirits. She received outstanding care at True Family Care home in Riverside, where she lived for the past year. Susan was born on January 28, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas. She never knew her parents and was raised in an orphanage. She visited that orphanage in 1984, and it had been converted to a senior assisted living facility. She came to California at the age of 15 to live with a foster mother at Venice, California. During World War II, she was part of a group of patriotic young women known as the "G.I. Susies" who entertained soldiers going off to war. She had a job at the cosmetics department at the old May Company on Wilshire Boulevard in mid-town Los Angeles. One day in 1945, while returning on the bus to Santa Monica after work, she met a young Airman who was taking classes in Santa Monica. His name was Francis E. Lemire, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Susan and Francis were married in Woonsocket on February 2, 1946. They lived at Air Force bases in Westover, MA and San Antonio, TX. While stationed at Lincoln AFB in Nebraska, their only child, Richard, was born in 1956. Francis was transferred to March AFB in Riverside in 1958, and he retired there in 1962. Susan worked with Francis at his upholstery business, Lemire Interiors, for 10 years. After Francis began teaching adult education, Susan volunteered with her good friend, Janet Goeske, at Janet's Ombudsman office at Riverside City Hall. She continued to help Janet at the Janet Goeske Center when it first opened. Most of all, Susan was a devoted wife and mother. After Francis died in 2003, she lived with her son Richard until she moved to True Family Care last year. She is survived by her loving son, Richard, and the caring staff at Claudia Lucena's True Family Care. She also leaves two "grand-dogs," Audrey and Daryl. Susan's funeral Mass will be on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Newman Center, 105 Big Springs Road in Riverside. Burial at Riverside National Cemetery will be private. Memorial donations may be made to March Field Museum Foundation, P.O. Box 6463, March ARB, CA 92518.
