Sydney Stalder Fast Obituary
SYDNEY STALDER FAST Sydney was born at home on February 3, 1916 to Frances and S. Gordon Stalder of Riverside, California. Sydney died in Riverside on November 12, 2014 which was her home for just two months short of 99 years. A graduate of Riverside Polytechnic High School in 1933 she convinced her father to let her attend the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA); however, there was one condition. She had to promise to return to RCC (Riverside City College, now Riverside Community College), learn a trade, and get a "real job". She majored in History, was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and graduated in 1937. After graduating she returned to Riverside and worked at Rouse's Book Store while attending RCC. After a few classes Sydney became the secretary of Mr. DeWitt Hutchings, the owner of the Mission Inn. In 1940 Sydney married Alger J. Fast who would be her husband for 60 years until his death in 2000. Sydney raised three children and participated in Riverside civic and community life as an active member of numerous organizations including Riverside Junior League, Visiting Nurses Association, National Charity League Ticktockers, and the Riverside Community Hospital Patients' Library. She actively participated in starting a national Kappa Alpha Theta sorority chapter at UCR. In 1974-1975 she was the Foreman Pro-Tem of Riverside County Grand Jury. She was an active golfer at Riverside's Victoria Club where she was President of Victoria's Women Golfers group for two terms. In addition to her three children Alger Gordon Fast, Catherine Elisabeth Matson, and Allison Kathleen Blackman, Sydney is survived by six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a close family friend Dr. Donald Munnecke. A private family celebration of life is planned. Donations may be made to Victoria Avenue Forever or the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center.
