Tomas Francesco Rossi Obituary
Tomas Francesco Rossi, born in Redlands, March 18, 1967, left this life on February 20, 2017 in Oakland, California. He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin and nephew. He leaves behind his wife Marianne Rossi; father, John R, Rossi (Maria) and mother Connie Jury (Bill); brothers John L. Rossi (Briana), Joe, and Tony Rossi (Megan)and adored nieces Avery and Ella Rossi; his beloved aunts Ginny Mangrum and Dolly Rossi; and uncles Tom Harrigan (Margie) of Redlands, Victor Rossi and Dean Rossi, both of West Virginia; and many loving cousins and their children. Tom was preceded in death by his aunt Catherine Curtis, grandparents Fred Curtis, Virginia Behenna, and Francesco and Lucia Rossi.
After graduation from John W. North High School in Riverside,Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree from University of California Riverside, and a Master's in Science from Colorado State University. Tom was also a Doctoral Candidate at Loma Linda University, completing all the requirements but the Dissertation.
In 1997 and 1999 Tom underwent two life-threatening brain surgeries. His slow and heroic battle with the after effects eventually brought him to a full recovery, and allowed him to live a full and active life.
Tom studied voice late in life, and sang bass with the Riverside Lyric Opera Company before moving with Marianne to Oakland, where he became a highly successful and respected professor of Biology at Merritt College. Tom was greatly admired and appreciated by his students, as a kind and concerned professor. Below are quotes from his students.
"I had the pleasure of studying Biology in the Spring of 2016 under the purview of Professor Rossi. His vivacious exuberance in delivering subject matter, his encouragement of student learning, and his influence on personal growth and development made a great impact on my life, especially in conclusion of my time here at Merritt. He definitely changed my life. His passion and essence will be greatly missed."
"I had not been in a classroom since I graduated from high school in 1989. Professor Rossi made me feel comfortable and optimistic! I struggled a lot. However, he made it very clear that if we needed extra help he was there for us. I only hope and pray that the rest of my professors are this cool."
Tom Rossi will be deeply missed. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcomed by Assistance League® of Redlands. Also, Merritt College in Oakland is in the process of setting up a scholarship in his name.
