Virginia (Ruiz) Rivera Obituary
VIRGINIA (RUIZ) RIVERA, 91, passed away on October 29, 2014 at her home in Merced, California, surrounded by her daughter and caregivers. Virginia was born on April 18, 1923 to the late Jesus and Angelita (Elenez) Ruiz in San Bernardino, California. The family moved to East Highlands where she attended school and was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church. Growing up, she worked in her family's grocery stores in East Highlands and San Bernardino, but also found time to play catcher on an all-girls baseball team. Virginia graduated from Redlands High School in 1941. During World War II, she worked as a statistical clerk at Norton Air Force Base where she kept records of all incoming and outgoing aircraft. Virginia moved to Riverside upon her marriage to John Rivera in 1951 and together they had three children. She took pleasure in entertaining and the couple was known for hosting parties at their home. After the birth of her children, she returned to school and studied at Skadron Business College in San Bernardino, California. In 1961, she joined the Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collectors Office where she retired as a senior accounting clerk in 1984. Upon her retirement, Virginia spent her time traveling (Hawaii was her favorite destination), crocheting, walking, listening to music, reading and caring for her granddaughters. Virginia's family and friends were her greatest joy and she will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to have known her along life's journey. Virginia was preceded in death by her late husband, John, who passed away in January 1999, her daughter, Monica Rivera, and her great-granddaughter, Sienna Jones-Howell. She is survived by her daughter, Olivia Rivera of Merced, and her son, Milo Rivera of Riverside. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Loriann Hernandez and Tracy Jones of Oakland, and Blanca and Alexis Rivera, of Riverside, and great-granddaughter, Audrey. Graveside services will be held at Olivewood Memorial Park in Riverside, California, at 11am on Tuesday, November 25. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hinds Hospice, 410 W. Main St. Suite A, Merced, CA 95340.
