Wakako Yamane "Coco" Barkwell Obituary
WAKAKO YAMANE BARKWELL "COCO" went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, December 12, 2014. Wakako was born on February 14, 1927 in Yokohama, Japan to the late Yoshimatsu and Kin Yamane. Wakako was a high school physical education teacher in Japan. She married Sheffield Barkwell, a military police officer in the Army, spending twenty two years at various Army bases. After Sheffield's retirement, they moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where she was employed at the Base Cleaners. They later moved to Anchorage, Alaska where she was employed at the airport's Duty Free Shop. Wakako moved to Riverside, California in 1993. She was very active with the Salvation Army Riverside Home League and became a Senior Soldier. Wakako loved volunteering, sewing, knitting, fishing and playing bingo. Wakako is survived by her sister Seteuko Shinoe, Tokoyo, Japan; four loving children, Mariko (Robert) Anderson, of Riverside, CA, Sheffield (La Rue) Barkwell, of Huntingtown, MD, Bill (Julia) Barkwell, of Anhcorage, AK and Rose (Johnny) Barkwell, of Hyattsville, MD. Wakako was blessed to have thirteen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Sheffield, daughter Eddie and her sister Michiko Yamane. Wakako will be remembered for her giving heart, super energy, great dancer and how she was able to do the splits into her eighties. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A very special thank you to the staff of Holy Family Hospice Care, Inc. In lieu of flowers, family request donations made to Hospice or the Riverside Salvation Army in memory of Wakako Y. Barkwell. Visitation: Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, 9am-11am at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Chapel, 7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92504. Memorial Service at 11:00am following visitation. Private interment at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
