Walter "Wally" Berger Obituary
WALTER "WALLY" BERGER Walter "Wally" Berger passed away peacefully at 79 years of age in Port Angeles, WA on July 27, 2016. Walter was born on November 15, 1936 in Nürnberg, Germany to mother Babette Barenreuter and father Johann Berger. In 1958 Walter emigrated to Canada and eventually to the USA to join the U.S. Marine Corps where he received an American Spirit Honor Medal, an award for those who exhibit a high example to their fellow comrades in arms. After an honorable discharge Walter became a Los Angeles City Firefighter where he proudly served for 37 years. A resident of Temecula, CA for 29 years Walter retired to the beautiful community of Sequim, WA in 2005 where he formed many wonderful new friendships. Walter was an accomplished painter, avid astronomer, chocolatier, carpenter, all-around fix it guy and lover of the great outdoors. He enjoyed the literature of Sagan, Bradbury, Michener, Clancy and anything related to our limitless Universe. An expert in early American History, he had a fondness for the Wild West and cowboy culture. In his retirement years he enjoyed long road trips in his RV and particularly loved to tour our majestic National Parks and the great state of Alaska. Walter is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 33 years Helga Berger; daughters Heidi Berger, Brigitte Schlemmer, Kirsten Pond, Erika Roberts; son Peter Schlemmer, sons-in-law Morgan Smith, Scott Pond, Mark Pond; daughter-in-law Ivy Schlemmer; grandchildren Tyler Pond, Haley Pond, Ethan & Emma Roberts, Ryan & Dylan Schlemmer, and twin brother Klaus Berger and his family. The family wishes to thank the excellent team of doctors and nurses at the Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles as well as the caregivers who helped him in his final days on Earth. There is a sparkling star in our galaxy that will burn brighter each night because of Walter and will continue to shine on for all those who loved him deeply and will miss him so greatly.
