Obituary Condolences

WALTER DANIEL GARDNER Age 94, passed away from natural causes on August 22, 2013 at her daughter's home. He was born on July 15, 1919 in New York, NY and had lived in Fontana, CA for 5 years, previously in Riverside for 56 years. Walter served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII in Italy and N. Africa (1942-1946). He worked for the NY Herald Tribune in the photography department (1940-1941); NYU as Lecturer, Instructor and Lab Instructor (1947-1951); Pan Am and Balance Officer (1951-1952); Riverside Unified School Districts as a Science Teacher, Vice Principal, Principal, Personnel Administrator (1952-1989-retired); Jurupa Valley High School as Tutor Supervisor (1989-1992); and Adult Education Instructor (1993-2002). He had a BS & MA from NYU (1946-49); matriculated for doctorate. He was proud of high school swimming when he was captain of the team and placed 3rd in Nationals (1938) and his military service as Unit Commander, Investigating Officer, Mine & Detonation Officer; and his work and friendships at RUSD. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Fred L.A. Gardner and Katherine F. Schroeder and brother Fred R. Gardener, all from NY. He is survived by his daughter Tracy Gardner (Adam) Garcia of Fontana, Ca and their children Aaron (20) and Nicholas (11); son Scotty (Mina) Gardner of Pomona, Ca and their children Drake (14) and Levi (12); and niece Margaret Gardner of NY. Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 at 10am at Acheson and Graham Mortuary with interment at 12:30pm in Riverside National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wounded Warriors.
