Willard H. Meier Obituary
WILLARD H. MEIER August 31, 1918 - January 8, 2016 Willard Henry Meier, Ph.D, Ed.D, passed away January 8, 2016 in Loma Linda, ca at the age of 97. He was born August 31, 1918 in Garfield, WA to John and Ida Meier. Willard was the second of three children, having an older brother Bernard, and younger sister Phyllis (Novac), all of whom grew up on the family farm in Farmington, WA. Willard attained a BA in History from Walla Walla College in 1940; an MA in History from the University of Washington in 1949; and an Ed.D/Ph.D from UCLA in 1966. While at Walla Walla College Willard met Blanche Glendora Johnson of Buhl, Idaho; they married on Sept. 12, 1941 and remained life partners until Blanche's passing in December 2014. The couple adopted their only child, Ronald Dean, in the July 1955. Willard's academic career spanned over 40 years, with many years of service in the Seventh-Day Adventist educational system. He served as Principal of Boise Junior Academy (1941-42), Seattle Junior Academy (1942-46), and Pacific Union College Preparatory School (1946-54). During his years as Principal at Pacific Union College Prep School he also taught a variety of classes at the College. Then in 1955 Willard was asked to represent Pacific Union College as Liaison Officer at Avondale College in Australia. On their return to the U.S. in 1959, the family spent one year in Washington D.C. where Willard taught graduate division courses at Potomac University (which later became Andrews University). And in 1960 the family headed back to California, this time to Los Angeles so that Willard could finish his doctoral studies at UCLA where he was also a teaching and research assistant (1960-63). In 1963 Willard began teaching classes in psychology, history and education at what was then La Sierra College; later becoming the La Sierra Campus of Loma Linda University. In 1968 Willard was asked by the University Board of Trustees to organize a School of Education as the eighth school of Loma Linda University. He continued as the Dean of the School of Education until his retirement in 1983. During his years as Dean he had the satisfaction of seeing the program grow to include complete accreditation of graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts, Specialist in Education, and finally the Doctor of Education. These programs became model programs replicated throughout California and abroad. Willard was named Emeritus Dean of the School of Education and Emeritus Professor of Educational Foundations and Curriculum in 1983. In addition to his commitment to SDA academic service, Willard was also elected to the Alvord Unified School District Board for two terms 1965-1973 serving as Clerk, Vice President and President of the Board during his eight years as Board member. Blanche and Willard were active members of the La Sierra University Church for many years, until moving to Loma Linda in 2003, joining the Loma Linda University Church. Willard is survived by his two grandchildren Jonathan Stewart Meier of Orange, CA and Angela Michelle Meier of Newport Beach, CA, as well as brother Bernard (age 99) of Pasco, WA, and sister Phyllis (age 93) of Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Blanche, and his son Ronald. Willard will be interred at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills; the family would like to express appreciation for all of the visitors from the La Sierra community who stopped in to pray and reminisce with Willard in his final days. The family will be conducting private graveside services.
