William and Joyce Bertram Obituary
WILLIAM J. BERTRAM 04/02/24 - 09/10/13 JOYCE M. BERTRAM 05/14/26 - 09/28/13 William "Bill" Bertram of Riverside, CA was born April 2, 1924, in Collinsville, IL. He passed away September 10, 2013, at home, at the age of 89. Joyce, nee Waymoth, Bertram of Riverside, CA was born May 14, 1926 in Collinsville, IL. She passed away September 28, 2013 at Parkview Hospital with family by her side, after sudden complications from pneumonia. She was 87. Destined to always be together, both on earth and in heaven, their passings were just 18 days apart.. Bill and Joyce had their first date on Valentine's Day, 1942. They were married June 21, 1947, shortly after Bill's return from World War II. They recently celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary. Throughout their lives they could always be found together, walking hand in hand, supporting each other, and enjoying life to the fullest. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II in the 309th Co., 41st Replacement Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations. He participated in the battles for Normandy/Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Bill and Joyce spent their entire careers in the lumber business, with Joyce working at Bill's side at the same companies for most of those years. After spending almost 20 years combined at Caseyville Lumber Co. and Gauen Lumber Co. in Illinois, they moved to California in 1966. The last 24 years of their careers were spent at Riverside County Lumber Co., where they retired on the same day in 1993. Bill never met a stranger, only a friend. Throughout his entire life, he loved striking up conversations with everyone he met. He always had great stories to tell, was a great teacher, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved traveling, woodworking and home projects, jazz and big-band music, and baseball. Joyce always put the needs of others before her own. She was extremely giving of her time, a great listener and friend, and always had a spontaneous wit and mischievousness about her that would make you laugh. Joyce enjoyed reading, traveling, swing dancing, and music of all kinds. Most of all, Bill and Joyce's favorite past time was spending time with those they loved-family and friends, old and new. One of their greatest joys recently came from holding their first and only grandchild, now 15 months old. They both will be so greatly missed by many. Bill and Joyce are survived by one daughter, Pamela (Alan) Young; one grandson, Brandon; one sister, Jeannine, nee Bertram, Miller; two nieces, Susan (Ed) Boerckel and Sandra (Marvin) Darling; and one nephew, Larry (Carol) Miller. Memorials may be made to St. John Evangelical United Church of Christ, 307 West Clay St., Collinsville, IL 62234. A combined funeral service will be held Friday, October 4, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. at Arlington Mortuary, 9645 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA. Interment will follow at Olivewood Memorial Park.
