William H. "Bill" Sturman Obituary
WILLIAM H. "BILL" STURMAN Age 91, passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2015, in Riverside, CA. Born to Floyd Sturman and Ruby (Bell) Sturman in Elida, New Mexico, on April 16, 1924. Bill was a graduate of New Mexico State A&M with a degree in civil engineering. He was a proud Aggie and returned often to his alma mater. He earned his master's degree in civil and structural engineering from the University of Illinois. He was a retired U.S Navy Captain with 30 years of service in the Civil Engineering Corps. He served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. During his naval service in Korea, Bill was part of "Operation Crippled Chick," which was responsible for building an emergency airstrip behind enemy lines on Yo Do Island. The Seabees, the U.S. Naval Construction Forces, worked 19 long days to complete the emergency landing strip; dubbed Briscoe Field in honor of the Commander of the 7th Fleet. He worked under Admiral Hyman G. Rickover for five years and on the Navy nuclear propulsion program. During that time, his duties included nuclear submarine design and construction. He received the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the United States. Other awards included the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Michelson Laboratory Award from the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake. Following the Navy, he served as a department head with the County of Fresno and the cities of Mountain View and Riverside. Bill volunteered as a docent at the Mission Inn for many years, and gave guests and visitors tours of the historic landmark. He also served as President of TROA (The Retired Officers Association)/MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) in the Riverside area. He was a member of the Riverside Newcomers Club, enjoyed playing poker, and participated in the Gourmet Group with his wife, Rene. Bill loved to travel and was fortunate enough to see the world many times over. He will be missed by his large family and many friends. Bill is survived by his loving wife of thirty-four years, Rene Sturman; his sisters, Floydene (Dee) Groves of Las Cruces, NM, and Janie Sturman of Thousand Palms, CA; his children, Rebecca Payne of Tybee Island, GA, and John Sturman of Oceano, CA; step-daughter Debra Brown (Jeff) of Riverside and step-son Charles A. "Andy" Hall (Mary) of Riverside; grandchildren Mason Payne (Ronda) of Chicago, Il, Melody Culver (Clay) of Savannah, GA, Jessica Sturman, New York, NY, and Angela Fillmore (Paul) of Tacoma, WA; step grandchildren John Hall of Los Angeles, CA, Dylan Brown of Riverside, and Kyle Brown of Riverside; and great grandchildren Sage Cahan, Reef Culver, and Sunny Culver of Savannah, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Michael Sturman; his step-son, Larry Hall; and siblings, Jack Sturman and Frank Sturman. Memorial services will be held Monday, January 11, 2016 at 1:15 pm at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, CA, 92518. Family and friends who would like to pay their respects and remember Bill are welcome. Reception will follow the services at Altavita (Air Force Village West), 17050 Arnold Drive, Riverside, CA, 92518.
