Willis Vincent "Beau" Sawyer Obituary
WILLIS "BEAU" VINCENT SAWYER, age 73, of Riverside, California, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015. The son of Air Force officer, Colonel Robert Langdon Sawyer and Eileen Ann (Cuddigan) Sawyer, Beau was born on April 27, 1942 in Rockford, Illinois. The family moved to Texas, South Carolina, Virginia and England before finally settling in Riverside, where Beau called home for over 50 years and where he raised his family. A patriot and specialist in the medical field, Beau served in the U.S. Army as an x-ray technician during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970 earning the rank of sergeant. He followed his military service with a 42 year medical career in radiology as an x-ray technician and CT scan specialist. Beau worked at Knollwood Community Hospital, Riverside Community Hospital and Parkview Medical Center, from which he retired in 2012. Beau was passionately involved in the Boy Scouts of America for over 25 years, first as an Assistant Scout Master and Order of the Arrow Leader, and later as an influential leader and role model in Foxfire, a highly regarded Outdoor Youth Leadership Training Program. Beau is credited with training and mentoring several hundred young men to become leaders in the community. On March 1, 1970, Beau married Kathleen 'Kathy' Zapara, an event that Beau often reflected upon as "the smartest move he ever made". Beau is survived by his wife Kathy; his sister, Bobbi Howland of Coronado; his brother, Gerry of New York City; two children, daughter, Heather Missico of Mission Viejo and son, Heath, of Arcata; son-in-law, Phil Missico; two grandchildren, Preston and Janelle; an aunt, several cousins, nephews, nieces, countless friends and many scouts. Beau will be remembered as a humble, sweet natured man of character and strength who believed in and passionately loved his country, family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Inland Vineyard Church located at 935 North McKinley Street, Corona, California. Pastor John Zapara will be officiating.
