Wilma Benson Barnett Glidewell Obituary
WILMA BENSON BARNETT GLIDEWELL Wilma was born January 29, 1927 in Minco, OK. She attended schools in Oklahoma and graduated from Joy High School near Wynnewood, OK in 1945. She worked as an LVN in hospitals in Oklahoma for 10 years. On January 17, 1947, she married Jack Henry Barnett in Wynnewood, OK. They had one daughter, Jacqueline Ann (Jacquie), born January 17, 1948. She lived in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1952 when her husband, Jack, was drilling oil wells in Lake Maracaibo. After moving to Riverside, California in September, 1956 Mrs. Glidewell worked for Security Pacific Bank in Riverside for five years and for the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools for 11 years. Her husband, Jack, died in July 1970 of a heart attack. After his death, she returned to school and received an AA degree from Riverside City College in 1973, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State Fullerton and her teaching credential from UCR in 1976. She taught kindergarten in Moreno Valley for 11 years and worked in the Teacher Emeritus program for another three years. She then taught reading at Palms Elementary School in Perris, CA for 7 1/2 years. She loved teaching young children and children loved her. In June of 1973, Wilma married Larry Glidewell. Her only daughter, Jacquie, died in June of 1978. Her husband, Larry Glidewell, died in June of 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. She was a member of Palm Baptist Church in Riverside for 54 years and was active in various positions within the church. She became a member of Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church in 2010. Wilma opened her home to several college girls and family members who lived with her for many years. The girls and some neighbors became like family. She "adopted" their children as her own grandchildren. She babysat one great-nephew, Jordan Miller, until he was seven years old. He lived with her at various times during his childhood and is like her own child. Mrs. Glidewell is survived by one grandson, Chris Colladay; one great-grand-daughter, Alysha Colladay; one sister, Joyce Horton of Lawton, OK; one brother, Jim Benson, of Washburn, MO; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, one aunt and many friends. She was "Grandma Wilma" to: Nicole Glick, Jamie Cortz, Derek Ogden, Dustin, Ogden, Nick Torelli, Terra Torelli, Keith Polston, Christi Polston Lebo, Bryan Polston, Christa Schley, and Bobby Schley. Wilma enjoyed quilting and was an accomplished seamstress. She also loved writing and wrote four books of poetry and one book of memoirs. Her travels took her to 17 foreign countries and Washington, D.C. several times as well as 49 of the 50 United States, somehow skipping Mississippi. She was generous and loving and will be missed by all who knew her. Viewing: Tuesday, March 5, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary. Interment: Olivewood Memorial Park (11:30 a.m.). Luncheon: Magnolia Avenue Baptist Church, 8351 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, CA 92504 (12:30 p.m.).
