Winifred St. Mary Noel Obituary
WINIFRED ST. MARY NOEL, daughter of Daietta (Perez) St. Mary and Frank Joseph St. Mary, was born on November 2, 1936 in Lake Charles, LA. She attended Sacred Heart School (an all Black Catholic school - rigid racial segregation existed in Louisiana at that time) and graduated in 1954. She was an accomplished pianist and organist during these early years and regularly played the organ for the various ceremonies in Sacred Heart Church. In 1954 Winifred attended Xavier University (New Orleans); in 1955 she attended a newly integrated college in Louisiana (recall "Brown v. Board of Education" was in 1954)! In later years she attended the University of Maryland - all in dogged pursuit of an undergraduate (Bachelor's) degree, which she never attained. She married in 1956 and had two children, Kenneth (now deceased) and Julie. The marriage failed in the 1970's and Winifred, with her usual determination, and strong desire to provide support for her children and to become a professional, sought out and was accepted to a special Master's Degree Program at the University of Massachusetts. She quickly earned a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology in 1973, and was honored by being invited to remain at the University of Massachusetts to study for a Doctorate Degree. She earned a Doctorate Degree in Counseling Psychology in 1978. There then followed an illustrious career in psychological counseling at distinguished universities - first at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and then at the University of California, Davis, while serving as a consultant for numerous public and private corporations and educational institutions. She retired from the University of California, Davis in 1998 after serving 18 years there. She then moved to the Temecula area, and worked in private practice as a Psychological Counselor in a local professional group for 10 more years. The loss of Winifred's son Kenneth was a devastating blow to her, and to all of the extended family members. She was most elated when her daughter Julie received a law degree, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1993. Julie became the lifelong focus of Winifred's life and Winifred Julie's life. Neither could stand to be away from the other for long. If they happened to be away from one another they spoke on the telephone every day. Winifred loved people and sought out friends where ever she happened to be living. She joined the "Classy Ladies" social club in the Temecula area shortly after arriving in the area. She was very enthusiastic about her home and enjoyed decorating it, in particular, with pieces of art and she loved visiting home shows. She enjoyed doing gardening in her yard; reading; held strong political views and expressed them forcefully. Enjoyed relating to us, anonymously, about the many and varied cases she came to deal with in her profession. She loved to be involved in helping her nieces and nephews work out their problems in life. Winifred loved her sister and brother, Patricia Abatte and Donald St. Mary, and their spouses, Eugene Abatte and LaVerne St. Mary. She leaves her beloved nieces and nephews - Wayne, Monique, Yvette (Elizabeth Friedman) Abatte; and Colette, Germaine (Picket), and Michele (Mark Van der Weide) St. Mary; their children: Ashton and Angelle Abatte; Noah (Abatte) Galbraith; Maxwell and Franklin (Friedman) Abatte; Grayson Abatte; Sebastian and Simon Van der Weide. Winifred peacefully departed this life on November 11, 2016 surrounded by her loved ones at Loma Linda Medical Center, Murrieta Campus following a fall which caused brain hemorrhaging. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 20, 2016 from 2pm to 5pm with a Vigil at 3pm at Miller-Jones Mortuary, 26855-A Jefferson Avenue, Murrieta, CA. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday, November 21, 2016, 10am at St. Martha Catholic Church, 37200 Whitewood Road, Murrieta, CA 92563 with a Repass following the Mass. Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, 11am at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 Slauson Avenue, Culver City, CA.
