I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Josef Purkart. Joe was my dissertation advisor at UCR in the late 1970s. I shall always be grateful to him for his willingness to answer questions, to provide suggestions, and to offer guidance. He generously provided me with office space for my work. His classes were always engaging and made the medieval period come to life. Most of all, the enthusiasm and discipline that he showed for the literature and history of the Middle Ages gave me a new appreciation of the word scholarship. He was an individual who had a major impact on my life.
I send my sincerest condolences to his family.
