J. Burdette Nelson M.D. Obituary
J. BURDETTE NELSON, M.D. June 14, 1931 - January 11, 2017 We have lost our Patriarch. With the passing of Dr. J. Burdette Nelson, a wonderful husband, father, doctor and friend to many has been taken from us. As the family grieves, the following poem expresses our feelings and we hope it will help the many who will also miss him. God looked around his garden And found an empty space. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arm around you and lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. He knew you were in pain, He knew you might never get well on Earth again. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered "Peace be Thine," It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. After completing his medical training at Stanford in 1956, Burdette enjoyed a busy surgical practice in Riverside, CA for over 30 years. Throughout his career, he was engaged in a variety of leadership roles and, after a back injury forced his retirement from general surgery, held the position as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Riverside Community Hospital. He relished the outdoors and after retiring again, moved with his wife to Julian to live a simpler quieter life. Years later, health issues necessitated a return to civilization and his second home in San Clemente, CA. With all of his family living nearby, Burdette spent his last days surrounded by love. Burdette leaves his wife of 64 years, Frances, and daughters Cathy Nelson of Capistrano Beach, Pam [Ron] Martin of Riverside, and Stephanie [Mark] Lowry of Riverside; grandchildren Jake [Ashley] Wright of Oceanside, Allison Wright of San Clemente, Sarah [Brad] Rollins of Oceanside, and Molly Martin of Riverside; and great-granddaughters Makenna Wright and Madison Rollins, also of Oceanside. A private service was held.
