Roy Moore Obituary

Reverend Dr. Roy Moore, Jr., 88, of Nikiski, Alaska passed away August 25, 2018 in the Elmendorf Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska after battling complications of congestive heart failure.

He was born in Thomaston, Georgia to Roy and Nannie Bell Moore. He was married to Barbara. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Georgia Tech, another Master's from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

After serving in the Army he worked for the Alaska Baptist Convention in the late 50's and early 60's as the Director of Religious Education at the Anchorage state office. He was instrumental in the planting and development of Southern Baptist Churches in many Alaskan villages. In 1967, he accepted the position of pastor at Faith Baptist Mission, which later became Mt. Redoubt Baptist Church, and moved his family to the Kenai area. He served that church and the community faithfully for the last six decades. His willingness to follow through on his commitment as a young man to God "to go where He wanted him to go, do what He wanted him to do, and say what He wanted him to say" was truly an inspiration to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Moore; sister Brenda (Harold) Barron; daughters Darby (Neil) Yosinski, Judy Leichliter and Nancy (Doug) Scott; son Lee (Pam) Moore; grandchildren Nathan (Wan) Dennis, Hannah (Jeremie) Poche, Derek Leichliter, Melissa (Justin) Evans, Taylor (Saeed) Suliaman, Makenzie Moore; and eight greatgrandchildren Jacob T., Ayla, Jaylyn, Jacob P., Madelyn, Jubilee, Braxton and Carter.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Nannie Bell Moore, his sister Mary Ann Boring, and his infant brother Billy Moore.

Two memorial services will be held. The first will be in Nikiski, Alaska at Mt. Redoubt Baptist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. The second service will be in Thomaston, Georgia at Valley Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m.

Psalms 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years. May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

We loved this man. He was such a good friend to our family for almost 50 years. Even after we moved to Anchorage he stayed close to us and was there through all of our joys and tragedies. He was a true man of God.
