Lindian Swaim Obituary

Lindian Joseph

Swaim, Sr.

Lindian Joseph Swaim, Sr., 95, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012, at his home in Advance, NC. He was born January 2, 1917, in Washington, DC to the late Oscar Eli and Bertha Lorraine O'Connor Swaim. He previously resided 48 years in his home in Durham, NC. He met his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Annette Quirin, while both were working with the FBI in Cleveland, Ohio. Lindian had a lifetime career as a special agent with the FBI and after retirement was a private investigator. He served in New Mexico, California, Chicago and Baltimore before settling in NC. He was mentored by Charlie Winstead who was an agent involved with the shooting of John Dillinger. Lindian, being a "city boy," was quickly dressed in cowboy boots and a Stetson hat while in the "wild west." During World War II, he interviewed a potential Nazi spy and shared other stories of intrigue and adventure.

He grew up in Alexandria, Va and worked full-time to pay for college. He attended his first year of college at the University of Alabama, but due to a lack of funds returned to Alexandria and worked for Beulah Pharmaceuticals as a "soda jerk" and attended George Washington University for three years. Determined to graduate from the University of Alabama, he returned for his final year, graduating in 1940 with a BS in Commerce and Business Administration. He credits the University of Alabama with providing him with his professional career and other opportunities afforded by his college degree. Our Dad's ambition to graduate from college influenced his commitment toward education for his children and to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and University of Alabama, where he has established educational scholarship funds for the benefit of others.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and their daughter, Carolyn Ann Swaim Baddour.

Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Swaim Miller and husband, Dr. David E. Miller, Jr.,DDS of Clemmons, NC, two sons, Thomas Phillip Swaim, Esq. and wife, Catherine of Pensacola, Fl. and Dr. Lindian Joseph Swaim, Jr., MD and wife, Brenda of Charleston, SC; twelve grandchildren, David E. Miller, III, Esq. (Jacqueline), Adam Swaim Miller, Evan Stephen Miller, Carolyn Leigh Miller, Nathan Thomas Miller, Graham Hamilton Swaim, Elizabeth Ann Swaim, Joseph Forrest Swaim, Christina Ann Swaim, Garrett Edward Swaim, Philip Augustine Baddour, Esq. Dear Tom and Catherine,

While we grieve with you, we are so eternally grateful that your father is with his Eternal Father forever! What a blessing you have that you were there when he received His Lord and then when His Lord received him.

With His Love,

He was a faithful servant to his country and his family, and will be greatly missed. He left a legacy of hard work and devotion that will be carried on by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. May he now rest in peace.
