Charles McDaniel Obituary

CHARLES HAROLD "CMAC" MCDANIEL (USN, RET.) 1942 - 2010

Charles McDaniel flew his final flight, in a T-39 Sabreliner, on April 12, 2010.
Charlie's first love was always to fly for the Navy. He was able to obtain an aviation slot and earned his "Wings of Gold" in December of 1968 at NAS Beeville, Texas. Charlie's illustrious naval aviation career as a fighter pilot included flying F-4s aboard several aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean. In 1973, while attached to VF-161, Charlie successfully recovered his crippled F-4 Phantom via a barricade arrestment onboard the USS Midway (CV-41). He attended Top Gun School and flew adversary missions with VF-43 as an F-5 pilot at NAS Oceana. Charlie finished his naval career on a foreign exchange tour flying A-4s with the Royal Singapore Air Force. Retiring as a Lieutenant Commander after 20 years of service, he distinguished himself earning the following awards: Naval Commendation Medal with 1 Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Sea Service Ribbon, Naval Achievement Medal with 1 Star, and the Battle "E".
After retiring from the U.S. Navy in October of 1984, Charlie continued to serve his country, as a contractor pilot training navigators and weapon system officers from the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force as well as German, Italian, Saudi and Singapore foreign national officers. A veteran aviator, Charlie recorded over 16,000 pilot flight hours.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 31 years, Terrie, five daughters (Kim, Tiffany, Suzie, Ali & Caroline), three sons-in-laws (Charles, Tyler & Will), and three grandchildren (Jesse, Abigail & David.) He is also survived by his sister Nancy, and step-mother Evelyn who resides in Knoxville, TN.
On Friday, April 16, a joint service for the four men lost from the crash will be held in the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel at NAS Pensacola at 10am. Following this service, there will be a visitation and separate service for Charlie at First United Methodist Church of downtown Pensacola at 2pm. Friends and family are invited to either service.
In lieu of flowers, the McDaniel family requests donations sent to Edith and Harold McDaniel Scholarship Fund, Berry College, P.O. Box 69, Mount Berry, GA 30149-0069

It was an honor and privilege to have known you, and to have flown with you, Charlie Mac. We flew many hops together while I was an instructor, and I always enjoyed it. I always felt like we "clicked" in the cockpit and saw eye to eye on whatever the task was. Flying with you, I learned so much, and there's no doubt that you made me a better aviator. Thank you for your service to our country and for teaching all of us over the past 20 years. You will be sorely missed and always remembered. We'll see you in high holding-

Ali & Caroline,
I am so sorry to hear the news of your father's accident. Sometimes it's hard to understand why things happen, but God knows. Remember that as Jesus is embracing your father, He also is holding tight to you and your family as He starts the healing process for all of you. Knowing as believers we will one day see our loved ones again brings us joy and peace. Will keep you in my prayers and ask Jesus to gather all of you in His arms as He comforts and give you the strength to make it through each day.

Dearest Terri and Family,
Words seem so inadequate at this time . . . to express my compassionate sorrow for the loss of Charlie "Mac". It is difficult to make sense of all that is happening at this time. I found God's grace, mercy and love sheltered and comforted me - deep within my spirit and soul. From that place I found the courage to grieve and to eventually grow. Please know I am here to offer my support and will pray for peace and healing love.
Aloha
