James Byron Matteson, 85, of Pensacola joined his wife of 62 years, Laverne Matteson, in Heaven on Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

Jim was born and raised in Rochester, NY on July 24, 1927 to Frances Beck Matteson and George Matteson. He served in the Air Force as a private first class for 3 years and was honorably discharged June 7, 1948.

Jim, the consummate gentleman, was introduced to his bride, Laverne Beaner, by their friend Jean Chatfield. They were married September 3, 1949. They moved to Binghampton, NY to attend Brockport State Teaching College.

Jim and Laverne moved to Winter Park, FL to attend Rollins College. He received his Bachelors Degree in Business.

Jim spent his career as a Contract Administrator for several Defense Contractors and a few other organizations including: Martin Marietta in Orlando, Brewton Iron Works, Fairchild Industries in Crestview, Teledyne in Mobile, AL, NASA in Slidell, LA and IBM in Manassas, VA.

Jim was active in the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts and played Tennis. In his later years, he enjoyed watching Florida State football and The Weather Channel.

After he retired, he worked part time for several years as a driver for Hertz Rent A Car at the Pensacola Airport.

Cherishing his memory are his five children and their spouses, James Matteson (Suzi), Dan Matteson (Ginny), Bob Matteson (Janet), John Matteson (Ronnie) and Maureen Proctor (Tim); 9 wonderful grandchildren, Tiffany, Shelley, James Stuart, Amanda, Ashley, Carley, Allison, Bradley and Mallory; and nearly 5 great grandchildren, Riley, Melanie, Tanner, Gracie and Parker (due to be born December 1st).

Memorial Mass will be held 11:00am Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on 12th Avenue in Pensacola with Msgr. Michael Reed celebrant. Inurnment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations with Mass Cards to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1212 E. Moreno St., Pensacola, FL 32503.
