Julie States Obituary
Julia Ann Hathcoat States

Julia Ann Hathcoat States, 93, died October 2, 2013 in Decatur, Georgia. She was born February 9, 1920, in Harrison, Arkansas to Marvin Arthur Hathcoat and Julia Ann Veazey. She grew up in Harrison with her three sisters. Her father was an attorney, her mother a piano teacher and housewife. The family was very close and loving.

After graduating high school she attended Drury College in Springfield Missouri. After college she worked as a secretary in Kansas City, Missouri. During WW II, Julie and her sister, Mimi, moved to Pensacola, Florida where she was employed at the Naval Air Station

Julie was very musical. She had her own radio program on KHOZ in her hometown of Harrison where she sang favorites of the time. She also performed at several nightclubs while living in Kansas City. She had a beautiful alto voice that lent itself well to jazz. In 1951 she married John Edward States, an engineer with the Navy, and they had one daughter. From 1960 to 1972 Julie worked at the University of Georgia poultry research lab in Athens, Georgia. She then moved to Pensacola, Florida to be closer to her sisters, while again working at the Naval Air Station until her retirement in 1982. In January 2011 she moved to Decatur, GA to live with her daughter.

She was an avid bridge player and active in the First United Methodist Church of Pensacola. She had a flair for design and decorating, and made a fabulous key lime pie. We will all miss her very much.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Wilna Emily Hathcoat, Mildred (Mimi) Gulledge, and Evelyn Joyce Green. Survivors include her daughter Ann States of Decatur Georgia; nephews Mark Gulledge (Judy) of Orlando; Dale Green (Sharon) of Plano, Texas; Scott Green (Glenda) of Biloxi, MS; and a niece Tracy Gulledge of Pensacola.

A private memorial for family will be held in Pensacola.
