EDWARD MONAGHAN Obituary

MONAGHAN
EDWARD "ED"

A first generation Irish American, lifelong Philadelphia resident and proud 1947 graduate of Roman Catholic High School, passed away on the morning of Saturday, November 18th, 2017.
Ed, the youngest son of Sarah and Frank Monaghan, is survived by his loving wife, Peg (nee Thiel), of 59 years, who he often referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world. Ed was also preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, John, Joseph, Peter and sisters, Rose and Veronica.
Ed was the proud father of 6 children, Margaret, Edward Jr., Patricia Schwartz, John (Denise), Don (Trish), and Susanne (Mike) Tuckerman. Uncle of Elizabeth and many other nieces and nephews and the beloved Pop-Pop of 11, Maggie, Katie, Casey, Ashley, Mikey, Eddie Timmy, Patrick, Brendan, Hailey and Grace.
Born in the shadows of Phila-delphia City Hall, Ed began his service to this great city at the age of 5, selling newspapers during the height of The Depression. From there he went on to venture positions such as dry cleaner, house painter, driver and mailman. At the age of 23 year, he was called to serve his country with the Army during the Korean War by building bridges for 18 months along the Rhine River in Germany.
When he returned from the military, Ed began his adven-tures as a 32-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Depart-ment, where while walking his beat, fell in love with the girl who worked at The Boat Shop, who would later become his wife. Following his retirement from the Philadelphia Police Department, Ed went to work as a Guard at Temple University Woodhaven Center for another 20 years.
An avid and enthusiastic story teller Ed would be hard pressed not to find common ground with anyone he met. In his retired years, he spent many evenings at Barnes & Noble acting as a matchmaker and counselor. He shared his thoughts and Irish luck as an avid letter writer and shared many a lottery ticket with friend and stranger alike. His stories, love and laughter will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral Services for Ed Monaghan will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017, at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 1723 Race St., Phila. Friends and family are invited to visit during the Viewing, from 9 to 10:45 A.M., to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Friends and family unable to attend Funeral Services are welcome to join our Celebration of a Life Well Lived at 1 P.M. at the FOP Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Rd., Phila. PA 19154.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael and Edward Tuckerman Special Needs Trust, 4747 E. Elliot Rd., Suite 29-217, Phoenix AZ 85044.

Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of Ed. My father and I both worked with Ed at Northeast Detective Division and both agree he was always a true gentleman doing a sometimes difficult job.

I remember Ed from my days working part time evenings at Barnes and Noble in Fairless Hills. He was such a kind, generous, funny and outgoing man. He made me laugh and often overstay in the cafe beyond my break time. I may have received a lottery ticket or two, and a chance at being matched with a possible suitor! I am very sorry for your loss.
