JOHN D. of State College, PA, died Friday May 1, 2009 at age 82. Born in Barcelona, Spain to an American father working for ITT and a French mother, he grew up in several European countries. John attended the George School, Amherst College, and the University of Pennsylvania (Architecture '48.) He served overseas in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as a lieutenant. John lived in Philadelphia until moving to State College in 1996.
His leading-edge home designs were featured in architectural journals. He was a scoutmaster in Philadelphia for many years, and an accomplished amateur naturalist. His urban garden is depicted in a mural under the I-95 overpass on Callowhill Street.
John is survived by his second wife Jean M. Womer, his brother Frederick Sacksteder, his first wife Thekla Sacksteder, 4 married children: Stephanie, Christopher, Andrew, and Tony, and 6 grandchildren, Brendan, Leah, William, Erin, Noah, and Asa.
