CHERYL RANSOM-GARNER Obituary
CHERYL, passed peacefully at home on April 15, 2011. Cherished wife of Carmen Garner, devoted mother of Michael D. Ransom (Audrey); Barry L. Ransom, Jr. (Keesha); Lemar A. Garner and Carl G. Garner; also survived by her mother Regina Johnson, 2 sisters, 2 brothers and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Homegoing Services Thursday, April 21, 2011. Public Viewing 9 - 11 A.M. Service to immediately follow at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, 230 W. Coulter St. Phila., PA 19144. Interment Ivy Hill Cemetery.

I was blessed to have been able to speak with "Mama Garner" several times over the phone and through e-mail since my college days with Lemar. It was obvious that she loved her family above all else. She is undoubtedly in heaven, shining down on us all.

I had the honor of working with Cheryl when she was affliated with the Philadelphia Adult Probation Department again doing tremendous work with many needed clients. She has been an inspiration to us all!

cheryl was a phenomenal woman, and a compassionate commissioner of dhs. cheryl was both fair and so humble

My deepest sympathy to the family of Cheryl. She was truly one of the most passionate, giving and driven woman I've met and had the pleasure of working with. Her commitment to children was commendable and I along with many others will miss the enthusiasm she always showed every day. To Carmen, Barry, Carl and the entire family. I did not get to talk to you personally while at the service but just know that I am praying and thinking about daily. Praying daily for you continued strength in such a deep loss. God is still on the throne and he will see you all through. Cheryl will be greater missed us all. During her time as Commissioner of DHS many of us felt she truly understood and valued us social workers in child welfare. Even though my interaction was often brief; she just felt like family - always greeted others with a smile, was very approachable, and kind. Cheryl was an inspiration during her time at DHS not only professionally but as a truly good human being. She kept the "human" in Department of "Human" Services. She will be missed by all. May you rest in eternal peace, Cheryl.

I am saddened and just learned about Cheryl. I will remember her style, dedication to work at DHS and at the YMCA with her son watching him play one of his first games. She was a beautiful woman and soo honored to have worked and known her. Carolyn Cardwell previous DHS Supervisor, currently in NC.

Sister Cheryl in every way captured the image of a virtuous women, not just in how she carried herself but how she treated others around her. She always had a big beautiful smile when you saw her.
