Robert Gary Franks
Harbinger - Robert Gary "Bob" Franks, 76, of Harbinger, NC, died on Monday, July 22, 2013 in his home with family. Born in Dublin, GA. Bob was the son of the late George Gordon Franks and Annie Olwen Bush and was the devoted husband of the late Mary Jane Maffett Franks.
Bob Franks enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and rose through the ranks to retire as a Quarter Master Chief Master (QMCM) and in command of the TWR Diamond. Spending his career on submarines as the (COB) he honorably dedicated service to his country and his shipmates. He was a member of the Atlantic Masonic Lodge No. 2, A.F. & A. M., Khedive Shrine Temple, and Sudan Shrine Temple in North Carolina. Bob loved his retirement in the Outer Banks and enjoyed golf cart rides to the sound for sunsets, boating, fishing, tending to his garden with his "little friend" Prissy, his dog, and doing his daily crossword puzzles. Bob was an avid Redskin and Virginia Tech fan.
Mr. Franks is survived by a daughter, Janet Melissa Franks of Virginia Beach, VA; sons, Robert Mitchell Franks and Benjamin Chester Franks of the Outer Banks; a sister, Barbara Ann in Georgia; grandsons, Gary and Trey; granddaughter Amy; devoted friend and companion, Jeanne Marsh; and a host of nieces and nephews throughout Georgia and North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his son Gary Andrew Franks in 2011.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 6:00 p.m. at the residence at 158 Owens Beach Road. A graveside memorial service will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street in Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Franks family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.twifordfh.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Khedive or Sudan Shrine Hospitals.

On behalf of the Charleston Base SUBVETS and Swamp Fox Chapter SUBVETS WWII, I offer you our sincere condolences on Bob's passing. We grieve with you on the loss of your loved one and all SUBVETS and their families have your family in our thoughts and prayers. There is no expiration date on the back of our dolphins and Bob will always be remembered as a “Brother of the Phin” and a great Patriot.
