Avon - Basil Hanson Hooper, Sr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Born in Avon in 1931 to Ulysses and Arkansas Scarborough Hooper, he was the youngest son of eight children. He was a dedicated serviceman, retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard after 26 years of service. He was also employed by the NC Department of Transportation for 15 years. He will be remembered for his kindness, helpfulness and joy of life. His comical spirit and humor will be missed by all. He was well respected by everyone for his dedication to work and most of all, his devotion to family.
Left to cherish many memories are his wife, Yvonne Gray Hooper and his three children, Sharon (Marc) Hooper Williams of Evergreen, AL, Basil (Linda) Hooper Jr. of Avon, and Ken (Diane) Hooper of Cary, NC. He was the loving "Pop" to six grandchildren, Amanda Hooper, Joel and Josh Williams, and Emily, Matthew, and Sarah Hooper. One sister, Roxie Hooper Alcorn of Orlando, FL joins numerous other family members and friends to remember his life. He was proud to be a "Kinnakeeter."
He attended Avon Worship Center where a visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, from 6 to 8 p.m . A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Gray Family Cemetery in Buxton.
