Suffolk - Norfolk native, Betty Ann O'Dea, proud mother, respected neighbor and dedicated church member passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 in Suffolk, Virginia. Betty Ann was born on December 13, 1923, the second child of Ernest H. Volke and Elizabeth W. Volke.
Betty Ann was in the second graduation class of Granby High School. She was an accomplished musician, and she enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading, cooking and working for the Joy Fund.
Betty Ann was born and raised in Norfolk, but she also lived in Florida and California with her husband and family after World War II. For 65 years Betty Ann was the wife of Charles Ulman O'Dea, a decorated naval officer and the High Constable of the City of Norfolk.
Betty Ann is survived by her son, Dr. Charles L. O'Dea, two daughters, Mrs. Tabitha Layton of Eagle River, Alaska and her husband O. Wes Layton, Mrs. Gail Wolflick and her husband Ronald B. Wolflick, and a grandson, Zachary A. S. Layton.
The family would like to thank Betty's caregivers from Meals on Wheels, Senior Corps and the Lake Prince Woods community.
A funeral service with visitation and reception will be held on Tuesday, May 28 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 North Main Street, Suffolk. Interment will be on Wednesday, May 29 at 10 a.m. in the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk.
